Where are ANKIs unique rugs manufactured?
ANKIs rugs are woven by hand both in Finland and Ukraine.
Why are rugs also woven in Ukraine, is it not possible to have all the rugs produced in Finland?
Anki has throughout it’s 50-year history used recycled material from the textile industry as the raw material for the rugs. At the moment, it is not possible to find suitable materials in Finland. We have researched the possibility to import textile waste, but have found that it is not commercially profitable. Due to this, we have decided to arrange production alternatives in order to guarantee stable production.
How do the rugs woven in Finland and in Ukraine differ from one another?
The rugs from Ukraine or Finland don’t differ from oneanother qualitywise. We are committed to providing our customers rugs, that have a lifespan of 20-40 years depending on its placement.
The most noticeable differences between rugs of different origins are colour selection and size. Rug woven in Finland has the maximum size of 185cm x 700 cm and colour selection of 14 different tones. Rugs from Ukraine can be woven in the maximum size of 600 cm x 1700 cm and the colour selection is approximately 300 tones.
Why ANKI doesn’t use textile waste from consumers as the raw material, like other companies in the industry does?
Rugs are usually manufactured with serial production. That means that all the products are made in predetermined sizes and colours. This type of manufacturing method is not applicable to ANKIs products. We are committed to providing custom handmade rugs, where customers have the choice to decide on the product details. For this type of service, we require a stable source of high quality rawmaterials. At the moment there is no service provider in Finland that could fulfill our needs according to our requirements.
Handmade custom rugs are of higher price range when compared to serial produced ones. Due to the higher price, we want to make sure that products delivered by us remain in good condition for decades. If we were to use textile waste collected from the consumers, we would not be able to do this since this type of material varies in quality too much.
How are you able to produce in Finland, when you have no pre-consumer recycled material available?
Rug woven in Finland are made of cotton fabric, that we purchase via an agency. This unfortunately leads to the price being even higher in rugs that are fully made in Finland.
How do I know, whether my rug is woven in Finland or in Ukraine?
The origin of the rug will be informed to our customers well before the order in confirmed. When in designing a custom rug, our customers will also be informed whether there is a possibility to choose the origin. In most cases the details of the rug designed will determine where it will be woven.
Why are ANKI rugs so expensive?
All ANKI rugs are woven individually as custom pieces. This type of manufacturing process requires much more work than serial production. Hence we have no similar possibilies to create savings in the manufacturing as the industrial producers do. It is in fact not possible to compare industrially made products with handmade ones.
In what way are ANKI rugs environmental?
ANKI pruducts are ethical in the way the we work very hard to fulfill the requirements of sustainability and durability. This is something that we have focused on during the 50 year old history of ANKI. A well made durable product needs not to be replaced and hence it saves natural resources and materials.
ANKI uses only pure natural materials. Avoiding synthetic materials enables us to make products that don’t cause microplastics emissions in to the environment. In fact our rugs are fully biodegradeable, since they only contain so called monomaterials. Also products made from monomaterials, in our case cellulose fibers, are easily recycled with either mechanical or chemical recycling methods.
